Thales Hastings Haskell was born in New Salem, Massachusetts, on February 21, 1834. When he was a young child his parents converted to Mormonism, traveled with the Mormons from Nauvoo to Council Bluffs in 1846, and continued on to Salt Lake City in 1847. In 1855 Haskell married Hannah Maria Woodbury, who was accidentally shot and killed by an Indian boy in 1857 (Haskell subsequently married Margaret J. Edwards).
